Home Office Visit | Cleaver Fulton Rankin

Cleaver Fulton Rankin was delighted to host a People & Skills Forum roundtable on behalf of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and the Home Office on Tuesday 8 January 2019.

Cleaver Fulton Rankin had been selected as one of the first law firms in Northern Ireland to welcome the Home Office who proceeded to outline proposals intended under the EU National Settlement Scheme which is due to formally come into operation on 30 March 2019, and discussed citizens’ rights in the event of a no deal Brexit. Karen Blair, Chairman and Director at Cleaver Fulton Rankin, offered a warm welcome to all attendees at the event.

The forum was attended by HR representatives from leading businesses in Northern Ireland and across a diverse range of sectors, who posed a number of significant questions and concerns to the Home Office in relation to the upcoming EU National Settlement Scheme. Many of the participants at the event outlined the number of European migrants employed within their respective companies and sought guidance from the Home Office on how best to regularise the legal status of European employees.

The Home Office covered how ‘right to work’ checks would be completed moving forward to afford a statutory excuse for employers. Among other areas of focus provided by the Home Office included the mechanics of how the scheme will operate, and the options available for more vulnerable members of our society. Interesting results of the pilot scheme were outlined by the Home Office which provided Cleaver Fulton Rankin with some insightful areas of focus under the EU National Settlement Scheme.

Conor McCrory, an Associate Solicitor and Business Immigration specialist at Cleaver Fulton Rankin, recently published an article on EU citizens’ rights in the UK in the event of a no-deal Brexit, which can be accessed here, with Conor clarifying with the Home Office during the Forum, some of the issues surrounding the scheme should a no deal Brexit proceed in the future.
